Now that he is on the verge of testing the 1966 MG Roadster that he has spent years restoring, Billy Bob Gholson has started the process to obtain a competitor’s license so he can enter some amateur races. Wife Jean is uncertain about her fifty something husband starting competitive car racing.
The sport seems fairly dangerous. The family attends the Indy 500 on a regular basis and they see the spin outs and other flame producing accidents. Jean is not sure she remembers any NASCAR style race that she has seen on TV or live that did not have some accident.
Gholson passion for cars is hard to compete with so Jean is prayer that he stays safe. So far, he has joined the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and he is saving vacation time to attend one of their professional driving schools. He loves to read the newsletter and attends Alamo Region events whenever possible.
His interest in restoring and working on cars started in high school. He restored a 1965 Ford Falcon while in high school and he drove that car for over a decade. He loved that he could perform most of the maintenance himself. Modern cars are less exciting because with all the computer components, he cannot work on the engines himself.
1960s era vehicles are his favorite. He is on the look-out for a corvette from that decade as his next project now that the MG is close to completion. His daughter Sally loves to hang out in the garage and watch him work. She used to ask him to repair her Barbie corvette so he would love to restore a 1960s corvette that he can give her on her sweet sixteen.
His high school son Barry wants to go to driving school with him so they are looking for a summer time spot for next year. While there is school in Texas, he is looking at ones in California so Jean and Sally can come along and enjoy the beaches and other California sites. He wants to sweeten the deal for his wife by adding a weekend in Napa Valley and also to add a trip to Walt Disney for his daughter.
Billy Bob Gholson is eager to fulfill his life-long dream of competing in an official car race. He has a suitable car and now he needs the license. Taking a professional driving school course will his son is something he will treasure. Now that Barry is looking at colleges and getting older, he has less time to spend with his father. Next summer will be a great time for all four to spend a long vacation together in California to play.
